Meghan Habibzai leads an evening of contemporary American and Spanish classical art song & Flamenco music and dance

Event Details

“Soirée Español” - Come to the Library of Mechanics’ Hall for a Tiny Desk-style presentation, featuring contemporary and traditional Spanish and American instrumental and solo vocal music, presented by a dynamic group of Maine-based composers and performers.

The Mechanics' Hall library will transform into an acoustic listening room showcasing modern and traditional canciones that blend with operatic vocals, dance, and poetry.

Featuring: Meghan Habibzai (vocals), Scott Wheatley (keyboard), Behzad Habibzai (guitar), Meagan McIntyre (violin), and Lindsey Bourassa (dance).

Doors open at 6:30 PM.

The concert is approximately 75 minutes.

There is a $5 surcharge on tickets on the day of the show.

ABOUT THE SERIES

Inspired by a certain well-known desk-based concert series, our Tiny Circulation Desk Series brings the same stripped-down, close-up energy, with more library cards and fewer office supplies.

Equal parts cozy hangout and low-key listening room, this weeknight series transforms the Mechanics’ Hall Library into one of Portland’s most intimate and unexpected music venues.

Filmed by the Portland Media Center, each concert feels like a live demo, a secret show, and a community gathering all at once.

Flamenco on Film - La Singla | Film Screening and Q&A with Tapas & Wine

Event Details

Join us for a captivating evening featuring the award-winning flamenco documentary La Singla, which tells the story of one of the most extraordinary and resilient flamenco dancers of all time.

After the screening, stay for a Q&A session with FLOR Director Lindsey Bourassa and FLOR Chair María Mazorra, where audience members are invited to share their thoughts and ask questions about the film and the rich tradition of flamenco art.

🎟️ Tapas included with your ticket
🍷 Wine & beverages available for purchase at the bar
🤝 Co-presented by FLOR and Mayo Street Arts

ABOUT THE FILM

As one of the greatest mysteries in Flamenco history, La Singla is more than just a film about a child flamenco artist, the Roma community, and the deaf community. This flamenco prodigy—who toured Europe with a young Paco de Lucía and shared the stage with the legendary Ella Fitzgerald—vanished at the height of her fame. This suspense thriller will uncover the universal story of an extraordinary woman whose mysterious gaze, unparalleled expression, and deep connection to flamenco art will captivate, move, and inspire audiences worldwide.

When Antonia Singla graced the stage, she did so without hearing the music. Born deaf to a Romani family in the suburbs of Barcelona, La Singla—as she would affectionately come to be called—rose to international acclaim by the age of 17. Quite literally moving to the beat of her own drum, La Singla’s pistol-like percussions were nothing short of revolutionary, gripping the world of flamenco with a dynamism never before experienced. But at the height of her fame, La Singla disappeared from the dance stage, leaving a scattered archival legacy of the world’s best bailaora behind.

Paloma Zapata’s hybrid film stunningly weaves the past and present together, expertly layering archival footage with passionate music and sound. One question drives her forward—to find La Singla herself and finally hear, in the dancer’s own words, the heartbreaking story of her life.

Running time: 95 minutes

In Spanish with English Subtitles

Welcome to Holland by Laura Sánchez | a one-woman multidisciplinary work that combines flamenco, poetry, humor, spoken word & film

Event Details

Welcome to Holland! is a multidisciplinary work that combines flamenco with poetry, humor, spoken word, film and physical installation to uplift the traditionally invisible role of the caregiver. This autobiographical live performance is inspired by Laura’s experience as an Hispanic, immigrant mother of two, one of them with multiple disabilities. Welcome to Holland!? redefines the narrative of motherhood in contemporary society and amplifies voices of children with disabilities, and their siblings and caregivers, who often go unheard.

Welcome to Holland!? was initially inspired by activist Emily Kingsley’s poem about having a child with a disability.  Laura’s second childbirth was impacted by profound trauma transforming motherhood into an uncharted odyssey, a landscape where every known path demanded reinvention and redefinition. Laura embraced Emily’s metaphor of Holland in her despair to find hope when uncertainty was all she had.  Welcome to Holland!? reframes the poem to grasp her essence of being a mother—a caregiver—when waking up to a world transformed, a place that demands a rebirth and redefinition of everything known and that she now calls “Holland!?”

This event is co-presented by FLOR and Mayo Street Arts.

Laura Sánchez is an award-winning flamenco artist, creator, choreographer and educator originally from Cádiz, Spain. She began her flamenco education as a child and received professional training from the Dance Conservatory of Madrid. Legacy Series | An Artist Talk with Flamenco Dancer Liliana Morales

Join us for an intimate artist talk with celebrated flamenco dancer Liliana Morales at the beautiful Mechanics’ Hall Library.

This special evening will be facilitated by her former student and lifelong friend, flamenco dancer and FLOR Chair, María Mazorra.

Now based in New York, Liliana will reflect on her remarkable journey as a renowned flamenco dancer, teacher, choreographer, and mentor. Often referred to as the matriarch of flamenco in New York, she will share stories from her lifelong career—offering insight into the many milestones and the vibrant artistic community that have defined Liliana’s enduring legacy.

About the Artist

Liliana Morales has performed in the US, Europe, Asia Australia and South America. She performed as guest solo artist with various dance companies such as Jose Greco, Maria Alba, Luisillo ballet de Madrid, Lola Montes, La Tati and many more.

She has worked in television, film (including In The Heights), videos and major opera companies such as the New York City Opera, Amato Opera and Zarzuela in Madrid; and has performed in celebrated flamenco tablaos in Madrid and Seville .

She has taught at Stephens College, MU, Ballet Hispanico of NY and Young Audiences in NY.

She has choreographed for various groups in Los Angeles, New York and Madrid and is the founder and director of Spanish American Dance Arts Company.

From the Huff Post:

“In 1965, Liliana Morales, a young aspiring dancer, showed up at a New York audition with the legendary Flamenco dancer Jose Greco. She was on her lunch break from her temp job as a legal secretary. Without changing her business suit, she executed a few dance steps for the famed dancer, and instantly landed a gig as a guest artist in his upcoming show at the Shoreham Hotel in Washington, D.C.

Morales, who lives in the East 70s, admits that her life has been uncanny for its lucky turns and fortuitous meetings, including her first encounter with the magnetic Flamenco dancer Maria Alba. Both Greco and Alba molded the young Morales and invited her to dance with their companies, which included dates at New York's Town Hall, Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, Jacob's Pillow and tours in the United States and overseas.”

Guitarist

Behzad Habibzai

Behzad is a music composer and flamenco guitarist. He began playing drums and classical percussion at 10, maintaining a busy schedule performing orchestral, jazz, punk rock, at rock clubs and symphony halls. At 14 he discovered flamenco guitar, going on to portray flamenco forms in performances with several international artists. Having worked regularly as a drummer, percussionist, and flamenco guitarist, he set his sights on the world of orchestration – entering the world of film music. Habibzai has already lent his voice to several films and documentaries, helping film makers tell stories. Behzad's flamenco album ‘Bosquejos’ (2020), and released singles can be found on most digital streaming platforms. Behzad often collaborates with his wife, Meghan Pilar Habibzai.

Singers

Brian J. Evans

Mixing disciplines, mixing professions, and mixed race, Brian J. Evans unpacks the “moments of suspension” that reside in the spaces between spaces—convinced that connections exist between us all and it is the responsibility of the Arts to remind us to be holistically human, lest we forget. Courageous vulnerability and intentional equity keep him aloft as he finds ways to give back and add to the communities, mentors, and ancestors who blazed trails and continue to do so! Brian believes it is the responsibility of the Arts to rediscover existing connections within humanity.

Meghan Pilar Whittier Habibzai

Meghan is a vocalist, arranger, composer and conductor. Her experience in choral music, art song, opera, musical theater, jazz, and bluegrass have resulted in performances at Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, the Kennedy Center, the Capitol Lawn in Washington, D.C., the Spanish Embassy in Madrid, and many others, as a soloist and ensemble artist. She was a member of the Soldiers’ Chorus of the U.S. Army Field Band from 2007-2019 and performed in the 48 contiguous states, Puerto Rico, and Spain. Meghan had her choral arrangements sung on National tours by the Soldiers’ Chorus, including her reimagining of the “Coventry Carol” at Baltimore’s Lyric Theater. Meghan met renowned Spanish composer Antón García Abril in 2012 at the Escuela Supérior de Canto in Madrid, and sang in masterclasses led by the composer in 2012 and 2013. She gave a recital in his honor at the Spanish Ambassador’s Residence in Washington, D.C. in 2016, and released a solo vocal recording titled “Canciones de Antón García Abril” in 2020, accompanied by pianist R. Timothy McReynolds. Meghan gave a lecture recital and masterclass on Spanish art song at University of Southern Maine’s Osher School of Music in 2024. Frequently collaborating with her husband, flamenco guitarist and composer Behzad Habibzai, they perform concerts featuring Spanish canciones and flamenco music, most recently at Blue in Portland, Maine. Meghan also released two instrumental compositions: “Salut Nuages” and “Spring in Winter”, for piano, violin, and cello. For more, visit meghanhabibzai.com

About the Artists

Bárbara Martínez grew up performing in New York City. Originally from Venezuela, she is the grand-niece of famed Argentine tango singer Libertad Lamarque. For more than 20 years she has worked as a dancer and singer with numerous flamenco dance companies and world music ensembles, and danced with the Metropolitan Opera, where she also sang as a child. In 2010, Bárbara performed at Carnegie Hall/Weill in a solo concert to a sold out house.

She appears in the documentary “Sobre Las Olas – A Story of Flamenco in the U.S.” by Carolina Loyola-Garcia and the photography exhibit entitled “100 Years of Flamenco in New York” at the NY Performing Arts Library. She is a Brown graduate and is currently pursuing a Masters at Berklee College of Music. Bárbara teaches music at the Ethical Culture Fieldston School.

A native of Barcelona, Spain, Albert Alabedra has self-taught guitar since the age of 14. Albert was exposed to flamenco at an early age, with a mother from Córdoba and grandparents from Sevilla, the southern Spanish province of Andalucía where flamenco originated. In addition to the traditional flamenco, popular throughout Spain, Albert grew up with the global influences characteristic of cosmopolitan Barcelona, especially the rumba Catalana.

Later formally trained in classical and electric guitar and then in jazz and flamenco, Albert has used his versatile repertoire to create his own unique “fusion” style. His musical career consists of performances with various pop, rock, jazz, funk, acoustic, and flamenco bands throughout Spain and New York.
